Who is New World Thatchers?
Commonwealth Roofing Corporation of Louisville,
Kentucky has been a leader in installing both modern and traditional roofing materials
since 1981. These traditional materials include wood, copper, tin, slate and tile. New
World Thatchers is the result of the long-time desire of Mike Sasse, partner in
Commonwealth Roofing, to introduce thatch roofing to mid-America. Over the past few years,
Mike has established a working relationship with Master Thatcher Peter Brugge of
Altrincham, whose team is one of the largest thatching contractors in England. They have
joined with New World Thatchers to bring this age-old craft to you. (Mike's son, Joseph,
moved to England in 1997 and is now learning the trade. A photo of Joseph at a
project site is shown here - he is on the left.)
In designing high-end properties, it is easy to underestimate
the visual effect of a buildings roof. Considering the large area it contains,
though, the roof presents a tremendous opportunity to make a unique statement about a
property and its owner.
Within the past few decades, a renewed appreciation for
traditional form and design have resulted in a resurgence of thatched roofing in Europe.
Across the United Kingdom and Continental Europe, vast amounts of reed are being used as
thatchers work on new buildings as well as rethatching old ones.
New World Thatchers has recently put together the resources to
include the United States in this resurgence. Once again, function AND form can coexist
within our architecture.
